A Message From Marc Tucker, President
Either we do a much better job of giving our young people the world-class skills and knowledge they need to compete in a swiftly integrating world economy, or we condemn them to working ever longer hours for ever lower pay.
We launched the non-profit National Center on Education and the Economy in 1989 to address this challenge. We began by creating the first Commission on the Skills of the American workforce, charged with analyzing the impact of the globalizing world economy on the requirements for education and job training in the United States. It's report, America's Choice: high skills or low wages!, framed NCEE's agenda from that time to 2005, when NCEE convened the New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce, whose 2006 report, Tough Choices or Tough Times, called for a dramatic redesign of the nation's education and training systems.
NCEE is committed not just to research, analysis and advocacy, but also to following through on its recommendations by creating the training, professional development, technical assistance and materials that professionals in the system need to implement the proposals we make. Our programs and affiliates are essential to our successful realization of these goals.
Our Programs
The New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce, which prepared a report, Tough Choices or Tough Times and is sponsoring a series of activities designed to help state and federal authorities implement the reforms recommended in that report.
The State Alliance for High Performance, a network of states committed to raising state education performance up to international benchmarks.
The Workforce Development Program, which provides the federal government, states and localities designs, assistance and policy guidance to implement world-class workforce development systems.
Our Affiliates
America's Choice, an affiliated organization that provides schools, school systems and states with the designs, materials, coaching and technical assistance they need to ensure that all students leave high school ready to do rigorous college-level work.
The National Institute for School Leadership, an affiliated organization that draws on the best leadership-training practices in education, business and the military to provide state-of-the-art training for principals and other school leaders.
