A Powerful Program for High School Students Who Are More than Two Years Behind in Mathematics
The America's Choice Ramp-Up to Algebra 1 course is designed for students entering high school three to four years behind in mathematics. The curriculum has depth and focus, with a clear and efficient path from arithmetic to algebra.
The research-based curriculum includes skills and problem solving with an emphasis on the conceptual understanding of mathematics. The most important topics are taught and are carefully sequenced so that students can be successful in Algebra and higher mathematics. Each topic is taught in sufficient depth so that it need not be taught again.
The course is designed for a double period and when students have completed the course, they will be ready to take an Algebra 1 course the next year.
What makes Ramp-Up to Algebra I unique?
Focus and balance
There are many possible paths through the thicket of topics in mathematics. Some are more efficient than others. The strength of Ramp-Up to Algebra I is its focus on the mathematics that students must understand to be prepared to do college level work. Topics on the critical path to advanced mathematics are covered in depth.
Lean and clean
The curriculum is a mile deep instead of a mile wide. Students are only asked to learn what they need in order to do advanced mathematics. They learn to apply one profoundly important distributive property to 100 situations, rather than learn 100 procedures that do not transfer.
Rituals and routines
The structure of the math classroom is based on a set of rituals and routines that puts responsibility on the student and the focus on student work. There is classroom Accountable Talk℠ — students using the language of mathematics in everyday math talk and presenting their mathematical ideas to the class. The teacher directs the students' work, moving them away from misconceptions to sound mathematical reasoning. Questions like, "Say why this is true" and "Is it always true or sometimes true?" are at the heart of developing mathematical thinking.
Serious professional development
America's Choice is renowned for it's superior and unique support and assistance— we have more than 15 years experience providing teachers, schools, and districts with high quality training courses, consulting, program reviews, evaluations, and other services.
