| The America's Choice design includes lower-division instructional materials and teaching strategies that are both demanding and motivating. |
| English |
| Our English classes use a workshop format that gives students opportunities to read and write on their own, conference in small groups and come together for whole-class mini-lessons and oral presentations by teachers and students. See a workshop in progress by taking a video tour. |
| Two features of our reading and writing programs are author studies and genre studies. These 25-day units of instruction lead students through a series of assignments designed to make them competent and independent readers and writers by immersing them in work of important authors and in different types of writing. |
| 25 Books Campaign |
| To encourage students to read widely on a variety of topics in a range of subject areas, and to help students acquire the vocabulary they need to be successful in college, every lower-division student reads at least 25 books or book equivalents a year. |
| Mathematics |
| The America's Choice lower-division math program helps high school teachers teach their standard curriculum more effectively by supplying them with strategies for teaching the most difficult core concepts that students must master to complete algebra 1 and geometry by the end of the 10th grade. |
| Safety Nets |
| Our lower-division design includes a system of safety nets to help students achieve the America's Choice standards regardless of how they are performing when they enter high school. These range from enriched, double-period ramp-up courses developed by America's Choice professionals in math and English language arts to tutoring, additional instructional days and summer school. |
| Center for Independent Studies |
| For students in the upper division who have dropped out or who are unable to attend high school full-time, the America's Choice design recommends a program called the Center for Independent Studies. Students complete high school though a combination of on-campus and off-campus learning under the supervision of an advisor. |
