Solving the Math Problem
In May 2006, President Bush appointed a national panel to identify effective and promising ways to teach mathematics. This new focus on mathematics comes at a time when America's Choice is offering two research-based programs that are internationally benchmarked against the highest performing educational systems in the world. Taken together, they offer a tiered system that can provide students striving to stay on grade level, as well as those students farther behind, a chance to succeed in advanced mathematics.

This past summer, students in Mississippi and New York City experienced a new kind of math instruction when their teachers implemented Mathematics Navigator at summer school sites. Using Navigator assessments, teachers were able to determine which concepts their students lacked and to place them in modules that focused on that need. Clearing up misconceptions, rather than simply re-teaching material, this new intervention program resulted in students making real progress and building a strong foundation for success in mathematics in the coming school year.

This fall, teachers in fourteen states and the District of Columbia will begin implementing Ramp-Up Mathematics, a state-of-the-art acceleration program that offers secondary students two or more years behind grade level an opportunity to catch up with their peers. In development for eight years, the 90-minute daily curriculum they will be using focuses on the concepts students need to know to be successful in algebra. They will be using the included assessments, created by a world-leader in assessment development, to monitor progress and assure results.
