An Intervention Program to Help Students Thrive
Mathematics Navigator builds a supportive environment where teachers and students are active participants in the exploration of mathematical concepts, skills, and problem solving, leading to rich and varied opportunities for success.
Getting through to students who have fallen behind requires a focused intervention, which helps teachers support students and address their individual needs. Activities must offer students a variety of approaches to the mathematics and opportunities to share and learn from one another. Each of Mathematics Navigator's discrete modules has 20 days of instruction and supports students of varying skill levels in reaching the same achievement goals.
Each module includes:
  • Pre-tests to diagnose weaknesses and strengths, checkpoints to demonstrate mastery of concepts, and post-tests to assess progress

  • Skills practice that follows a logical progression, emphasizes patterns, and promotes strategies for successful computation

  • Concept lessons that are fully developed, with procedures and problem solving that support conceptual development, rather than substitute or distract from it

  • Problem solving through group, partner, and solo work

  • Opportunities for students to explain ideas, concepts, strategies, and solutions in their own words, both orally and in writing

  • Multiple representations of mathematics, which gives students with different learning styles many opportunities to understand concepts

  • Individualized instruction built into the class schedule, which allows teachers to work with students on their individual needs

  • Opportunities for students to analyze their own mistakes—and those of other students—and learn how to correct mistakes to achieve success
