Everything You Need to Succeed

When you select Ramp-Up Literacy, you gain access to the best professional development and the most well-designed educational materials you will ever find.
The Ramp-Up Literacy package includes:

High-quality, sustained professional development tailored for districts or schools:

  • District packages include nine days of training for up to 30 people, including a summer seminar and continuing with follow-up sessions during the school year, plus a separate day of training for district administrators who supervise the implementation, to build their understanding and sustain support for the course. Optional on-site technical assistance, coaching, and follow-up for participating teachers, principals, and/or program coordinators is recommended for districts as well.
  • School packages include seven days of on-site training for three or more people, including a summer seminar and continuing with follow-up sessions during the school year, plus five days of technical assistance.

Teachers receive solid grounding in the latest research on effective literacy instruction; they study videotaped examples of Ramp-Up Literacy in action; they participate in full simulations of daily lessons; and they have many opportunities to discuss and reflect on their own classes and student progress. Trainers take special care to foster a learning community among participating teachers and administrators.

An engaging, year-long curriculum with teacher materials, student handbooks, and aligned assessments, including:

  • A set of eight teacher guides and monographs, including Getting Started, The Work Period, English Language Learners, Cross-Age Tutoring, Vocabulary, Fluency and Comprehension, and Writing
  • Day-to-day teachers’ manuals with advice on introducing classroom activities, pacing each lesson, illustrating key concepts, and tying up loose ends, organized in three thematic units
  • Student handbooks for each of the three units of study, including useful reference materials, assignments, and activities
  • A comprehensive set of assessments that are exceptionally useful tools for accurately monitoring student progress and differentiating instruction

The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), a recognized world leader in educational test design, developed Ramp-Up Literacy’s formative assessment system exclusively for America’s Choice. ACER helped develop items for the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and created the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

Through end-of unit tests, teachers evaluate students’ skills in reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing, providing a reliable snapshot of student progress over the course of the year and helping schools make appropriate placement decisions for subsequent years. Teachers also learn to determine students’ independent reading levels and fluency and accuracy rates, while also tracking the number of pages students read during independent reading, so they can be grouped appropriately for instruction

Ramp-Up Literacy also specifies the procurement of a classroom library. The library includes books and magazines carefully selected to appeal to adolescent readers of varying levels of proficiency to encourage independent reading. Reading materials touch on a wide range of topics, including themes introduced in class. Read-aloud books allow students to follow along as teachers model successful reading strategies.
